Romania is currently grappling with heightened national security concerns following the downing of a second drone on its territory in less than 24 hours. The Ministry of National Defence confirmed that both drones, which illegally entered Romanian airspace, were neutralized by the same F-16 pilot. Prosecutors have opened a criminal investigation into the incidents, identifying the drones as Shahed-type, commonly used in conflict zones.
Political figures, including President Nicușor Dan and Minister of National Defence Radu Miruță, have emphasized the inviolability of Romania's borders and the country's readiness to defend its airspace. The repeated incursions have prompted calls for increased vigilance and a strategic reassessment of national defense. Meanwhile, the political landscape is in flux, with Adrian Vestea recently appointed Prime Minister and tasked with forming a new government after the previous coalition's collapse.
Separately, anti-corruption efforts continue, with the arrest of a plant director found with a large sum of money and ongoing investigations into other political figures. Civil society has also voiced criticism regarding proposed justice reforms.
