Lifeguard Protests Mount Amidst Rescues; Kyrenia Festival Sparks Diplomatic Push

Cypriot lifeguards are protesting against the early closure of lifeguard towers, calling it a crime and raising safety concerns. This comes as a couple was successfully rescued from a near-drowning incident on Olmpiou beach in Limassol, a day after another near-tragedy involved a 25-year-old man and his wife in the same area.

In a new development regarding the occupied territories, Member of the European Parliament (MEP) Loukas Fourlas has urged Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić to intervene and halt a planned electronic music festival at Kyrenia Castle, arguing it would legitimize the current administration in the occupied areas. Meanwhile, the government is moving forward with new policy initiatives, including a decree to address household energy poverty, the unveiling of pension reform, and efforts to ensure development reaches the smallest communities and end the illegal burning and dumping of agricultural plastics.

Other domestic news includes the passing of noted academic Andreas Kazamias, a driver rescued after a traffic accident in Nicosia, and a fire in Pissouri that endangered homes. President Nikos Christodoulides is also scheduled to attend the UN General Assembly in New York in September.
