A massive Russian missile and drone attack struck Kyiv and the surrounding region, resulting in at least 12 fatalities and 34 injuries in the capital. The city has declared August 21st a day of mourning for the victims of the assault, which also hit Zhytomyr, killing three and injuring 53, and caused casualties in the Kyiv region. Russia reportedly used a variety of aerial weapons, including Oniks, Zircon, Iskander, and Kalibr missiles, alongside over 160 drones in the widespread bombardment.
In other domestic news, Ukraine's Deputy Defense Minister announced impending changes to the country's mobilization system. A company commander was awarded the "Hero of Ukraine" title for evacuating wounded soldiers. The government has also suspended the chairman of the supervisory board of the state-owned 'Sense Bank'.
Additionally, the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant experienced its 15th blackout this year, raising nuclear safety concerns. Former Minister of Defense Mykhailo Fedorov is reportedly considering a trip to the United States, while an analysis highlighted the potential long-term impact of Russian attacks on the Ukrainian book publishing industry.
