A fatal shooting in Overasselt, initially reported yesterday, has escalated into a major domestic incident, with Minister of Justice and Security David van Weel describing the violence as "unprecedented and new." The incident, believed to be linked to an 812-kilogram drug shipment, involved a shootout, a death, injured officers, and a large police operation leading to 34 arrests.
Separately, a COVID-19 commission has commenced public hearings, with former Dutch Minister of Defence Kajsa Ollongren and former Minister of Justice and Security Ferdinand Grapperhaus being questioned as part of an extensive inquiry into the pandemic's policy.
In other domestic news, local tensions erupted in Tholen, where council members found themselves unable to leave the town hall due to a demonstration. The protest followed a contentious debate on plans for temporary asylum seeker accommodation.
