Ministers delay a housing decree while rental listings vanish

The Socialist party and Sumar delayed a cabinet meeting after failing to agree on a new housing decree. Sumar presented a fresh draft proposing an eviction ban until 2028 and indefinite rent extensions. The government is attempting to regulate a market where, in the three years since the last housing law passed, long-term rental listings have dropped by 20% and short-term holiday lets have doubled.
Following mediation by the city council, an elderly woman known as Maricarmen will return to her apartment after her eviction was reversed. Pointing to the resolution, Madrid’s mayor demanded an immediate end to the housing protest camp that has occupied the Puerta del Sol for three nights.
September inflation reached 4.9%, driven by the rising cost of petrol. To offset the winter impact, ministers will cap the increase in regulated gas tariffs at 15%, fix the price of a butane canister at €19.55, and extend tax rebates on motor fuel.
