Heating tariffs jump 50% as opposition targets the president

Households in Chișinău and Bălți will see heating tariffs rise by more than 50% on October 1, tracking a hike in natural gas prices to 26.14 lei per cubic metre. In Fălești, farmers protested the mounting costs by driving their agricultural machinery into the streets.
The political opposition began a procedure to suspend Maia Sandu, the president, though the initiative's chances of success are unproven. Meanwhile, prosecutors filed new charges against Igor Dodon, a former president, in the "Black Bag" corruption case, and sent Viorel Melnik, a former deputy and associate of Ilan Shor, to trial for money laundering and illegal party financing.
The Superior Council of Magistracy issued a disciplinary warning to a judge at the Chișinău Court. Separately, the government postponed plans to tax incoming packages from Temu, an issue the finance minister described as a novel concept for the state.
