Ronaldo walks out on national team

The era of Cristiano Ronaldo appearing for the national side may have ended in the middle of a press conference. The captain left the training camp yesterday following a series of disagreements with the coach, Jorge Jesus, and the federation president, Pedro Proença. While his teammates spent the afternoon downplaying the friction, Ronaldo promised to eventually reveal the truth to the public; for now, the national team is learning to proceed without him.

The minority government has secured its immediate future after the Socialist Party confirmed it will abstain from the upcoming budget vote. In exchange for the lifeline, Prime Minister Luís Montenegro provided guarantees on pensions and constitutional reviews. The far-right Chega party also opted for an abstention to allow new rental laws to move to debate, suggesting that for one week at least, the opposition prefers a quiet parliament to a collapsed one.

The truce in the assembly does not extend to the streets, where a public sector strike on October 2nd is expected to halt garbage collection and close schools. Outside the cities, the heatwave season has expanded by 40 days over the last four decades. Extreme temperatures now arrive a full month earlier than they did in the 1980s.
