Police arrest two in lottery embezzlement case

Two people were arrested in a fresh investigation into the embezzlement of €1.3 million from the State Lottery. The case has taken a turn that prosecutors may find difficult to navigate: their own star witness reportedly testified in favour of the accused. The lottery’s luck, it seems, has run out in court.
A major police sweep named Operation Cleaner has resulted in 5,628 detentions since September. Officers conducted over 150,000 searches and 74,000 individual checks to reach that figure, filing more than a thousand criminal charges against suspected dealers and violent offenders in the process.
President Gordana Siljanovska-Davkova is questioning why the European Union needs to mention the national language in its negotiation framework if, as the bloc claims, it poses no threat. At home, the government is preparing a budget revision to lower both revenue and expenditure targets; the opposition SDSM suggests the initial planning was simply inadequate.
