Cypriot authorities have announced the formation of a new FBI-like organization with the explicit goal of dismantling criminal networks across the island. This significant institutional development aims to enhance the country's efforts against organized crime.
In other key developments, President Nikos Christodoulides and Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhurman are set to meet on October 13 under the auspices of the United Nations, signaling a renewed diplomatic push on the Cyprus problem. Concurrently, the Auditor General has forwarded findings concerning alleged environmental irregularities in the Akamas region, including issues with road networks and illegal structures, to the Attorney General for further investigation.
Meanwhile, public health statistics reveal a somber shift, with cancer now surpassing cardiovascular diseases as the primary cause of death in the Republic of Cyprus for the first time in three decades. The island is also experiencing a surge in fuel prices, which are reportedly negating existing subsidies.
