Opposition figure files complaint over state firework display

Akos Hadhazy, an anti-corruption campaigner and former MP, has filed a formal complaint regarding the ministry of interior's investigation into the August 20 fireworks. The display is a staple of national celebrations, though for Hadhazy it has become a matter for the police.

The ruling Fidesz party is also facing questions about its guest lists. A former candidate in Debrecen appeared on stage with singer Gabi Tóth, a recipient of state cultural funding, during the recent election cycle. The candidate maintains the appearance was not a campaign event.

While the government manages its celebrity endorsements, the opposition is looking for a younger audience. Socialist leader Imre Komjáthi has taken to a Discord server and cited the video game Stalker 2 to bridge the generation gap. Elsewhere, historical reflections on the 70th anniversary of 1956 recall the Rákosi regime, when the party decided that a single mark in a class diary could determine a student's entire future.
