Education Minister faces exit after argument with Prime Minister

Minister Robert Plaga may be the next cabinet member to depart following a row with Prime Minister Andrej Babiš. This potential resignation comes after a public argument between the minister and the leader of the ANO party.

The government is also rewriting the rules for retirement. From January, the monthly bonus for each child raised will disappear for new pensioners, replaced by a different assessment of care years. The change means parents retiring next year will see their years of care calculated through a different mechanism rather than receiving the flat monthly bonus.

The fate of public broadcasting fees appears to have been decided without the broadcasters. Tomio Okamura, the SPD leader and head of the Chamber of Deputies, declared the debate over and the abolition of fees a certainty. The Prime Minister has since rejected calls for a public discussion on the matter; in the government's view, the time for talking has already passed.
