The government's proposed administrative reform, which includes merging small communes, has met strong opposition from UDMR leaders. The party, a supporter of the government, fears the plan could lead to a significant loss of mayoral positions. The proposal, put forth by Sorin Grindeanu, President of the Social Democratic Party (PSD) and President of the Chamber of Deputies, is being analyzed for its political implications.
Separately, Călin Georgescu, a former presidential candidate, has had his pre-trial detention extended by an additional 30 days by the Bucharest Court of Appeal. This decision, which is final, was made by judges Andrei Buliga and Dragoș Mirea, whose past judicial decisions and professional backgrounds, including prior roles as a prosecutor and police officer respectively, have drawn scrutiny.
Meanwhile, other domestic news highlights ongoing issues of state inefficiency and public safety. An abandoned ski lift installation, neglected for 12 years and now in an animal enclosure, represents millions of euros wasted due to bureaucracy. Constanța County possesses two Black Hawk helicopters that cannot be used because personnel hiring requires approval from Bucharest. Additionally, millions of pieces in Romanian museums remain unassessed, potentially undervaluing national treasures.
