BMW Steyr has issued a stark warning that a ban on combustion engines could lead to the loss of thousands of jobs. This comes as Christian Stocker, who was sworn in as Federal Chancellor on March 3, 2025, leads a three-party coalition government comprising the Austrian People's Party (ÖVP), the Social Democratic Party (SPÖ), and the liberal NEOS. Federal President Alexander Van der Bellen, re-elected in October 2022, continues his second term.
In other domestic news, business organizations like WKO and IV are facing accusations of sending mass emails to parliamentarians in an effort to undermine Austria's climate targets. A parliamentary dispute has also emerged concerning the term "remigration," with Bures accusing Rosenkranz of a "serious mistake" in its usage. Meanwhile, Rainer Will, CEO of the Austrian Trade Association, has highlighted excessive bureaucracy and expressed frustration over a package tax.
Separately, a jeweler in Tulln was the target of an attempted burglary, a year after a similar incident. The Freedom Party (FPÖ) remains the primary opposition, having secured the most votes in the September 2024 election but ultimately failing to form a government.
