Police Director Gazmend Hoxha has resigned after three days of protests over the murder of Arlinda Zekaj. Demonstrators, who have now pitched a tent in front of the government building in Pristina, are demanding a wider clear-out of the leadership following reports that the prosecution was repeatedly warned of threats against Zekaj before her death.
The interior and foreign ministers have both rejected calls to follow the police chief out the door, arguing that their departures would not empower women or assist the pursuit of justice. While the two ministers insist they should be allowed to continue their work, the demonstrators in the tents outside continue to demand further accountability.
Away from the capital's makeshift camp, the Mayor of Pristina, Perparim Rama, was questioned by the Special Prosecutor’s Office yesterday over a corruption case involving a city architectural project. Elsewhere, an inspectorate halted work on a half-Olympic swimming pool in Podujevo a day after an investigative report questioned the project’s legality.
