Capital's mayor office head alleges pressure and contract favoritism

The head of the capital's mayoral office has accused Mayor Ion Ceban of persistent pressure, citing 35 million lei in state and municipal contracts won by her son's firm. The governing Party of Action and Solidarity has meanwhile picked Finance Minister Victoria Belous to run for the mayoralty, suggesting a crowded race ahead for the city hall.

The energy outlook remains precarious. While the government prepares to receive gas from the Black Sea, ministers have warned they lack the controls to prevent price hikes if the autumn turns cold. To compensate, the state has opened enrollment for heating subsidies of up to 1,000 lei, even as interest rates on loans are expected to rise.

Diplomacy and internal security continue to overlap. Russia has sentenced a 65-year-old Moldovan woman to 14 years for treason, a move Chisinau has condemned. Closer to home, a drone was tracked briefly through national airspace near Calarasi before exiting, a reminder of the proximity of the war across the border.
