Cyprus received a significant economic boost today as Fitch Ratings upgraded the country's credit rating to 'A', citing impressive fiscal performance and a substantial reduction in public debt. President Nikos Christodoulides welcomed the upgrade, attributing it to the resilience of the Cypriot economy.
In other domestic news, the government is set to launch a four-year strategy aimed at attracting foreign investors and skilled workers, particularly from the United States. Meanwhile, the state health services organization, OKYpy, will see its public funding reduced, marking a shift towards greater autonomy for public hospitals.
The ongoing Cyprus problem saw a new development with the Republic of Cyprus formally notifying the United Nations about Turkish research vessels conducting seabed surveys within its territorial waters for a planned natural gas pipeline to the occupied north, viewing this as a violation of sovereignty. Discussions on restarting negotiations for a resolution are reported to be at a 'crucially critical point'.
