Former health secretary faces new influence-peddling claims

Prosecutors in Lisbon have widened an investigation into Lacerda Sales, the former Secretary of State for Health. While previous inquiries focused on the preferential treatment of a pair of twins, investigators now allege a broader pattern of influence-peddling involving a list of politicians and public figures linked to the Socialist Party.

The civil service is largely elsewhere today as 350,000 public administration workers began a 24-hour strike. The walkout may paralyze schools and courts, while businesses are also facing a difficult backdrop after 41,000 jobs vanished in a single quarter—the sharpest decline in employment since the pandemic.

Prime Minister Luís Montenegro has announced a €50 increase to the Solidarity Supplement for the Elderly. The raise will bring the benefit to €720 next year; the bill is expected to reach €100 million by 2027.
