Authorities have begun reviewing hundreds of video recordings from a football fan procession in Split to identify more people who performed Hitler salutes and used anti-Semitic slogans. Four people were initially detained followed by 15 more, while the opposition and legal analysts link the rise of such symbols to the political climate under Prime Minister Andrej Plenković's decade-long tenure.
Mr Plenković is currently marking his tenth year in power with a parliamentary no-confidence vote and a debate on his annual report. Critics have spent the morning noting that while the state arrests the fans, it has spent years tolerating the nationalist culture that produces them. The Prime Minister, for his part, would prefer the discussion to remain on his legislative record.
The fans of the Hajduk Split 'Torcida' group have, however, displayed some sportsmanship. After a match against Ajax, they reportedly began returning banners taken from the visiting Dutch supporters. It is a gesture of goodwill that has its limits; at least one banner is expected to stay in Split.
