Overnight field fire destroys dozens of old cars

Dozens of old cars burned in an open field in Nicosia overnight. Significant damage was reported by the early morning hours.

Diplomacy in the north remains a matter of conflicting paperwork. Tufan Erhürman, the Turkish Cypriot leader, says he never received the 19-point document from the Cypriot president. Ankara, meanwhile, has clarified that it will not accept any deal that disrupts the 'realities' it has already established on the island. The two leaders did find time to attend a peace festival in Pyla, though it is easier to share a festival stage than a negotiating table.

The domestic mood is less celebratory. Fidias Panayiotou led a protest at the presidential palace against electricity prices. Inside the civil service, a new evaluation system is producing precisely the results one might expect: supervisors are awarding scores approaching 'excellent' to employees, regardless of performance or prior warnings.
