Former politician Duarte Lima goes to trial for Ribeiro murder

Duarte Lima’s trial for the murder of Rosalina Ribeiro opened on Thursday with a predictable attempt to end it before it began. His lawyers argued that the statute of limitations has expired, a technicality they hope will settle a case that has remained open for years.

The government suggested that foreigners who cause disorder could lose their residency, a policy the Socialist Party described as intimidation. At the same time, new data shows the country is losing its own citizens at a faster rate than previously thought; some 780,000 people emigrated between 2021 and 2025.

Daily life is becoming a series of subtractions. Three in ten citizens report they cannot access timely healthcare, while others are spending less on food and medicine to cover energy bills. Politically, the shift is just as visible: supporters of President António José Seguro are celebrating his influence over the Prime Minister as a sign that the President is finally in command.
