Unions demand over 6% pay rise as public sector negotiations open

Negotiations for 2027 public sector salaries have commenced today, with unions advocating for increases exceeding 6%. This comes after a period where real wage gains for public employees were only secured in two of the last ten years.
In other developments, Prosecutor-General Amadeu Guerra dissolved a group tasked with preventing fraud related to European funds. Additionally, the Chega party accused the President of the Assembly of the Republic, José Pedro Aguiar-Branco, of attempting to obstruct an inquiry into Luís Neves, the Minister of Home Affairs, demanding a swift start to the parliamentary commission.
Portugal has also issued over 4,600 work visas to Brazilians in 2026, reflecting the impact of the suspended work-seeking visa. Meanwhile, the country is exploring five pilot projects and international examples to prepare its cities for extreme heat by incorporating more trees, and the Rector of the University of Leiria and Oeste, Carlos Rabadão, emphasized the need for higher education access reform.
